New Organic Snacks

I only promote products that meet certain criteria. Ecobrands asked me to review their new Organix Goodies Range for kids and my first response was naturally sceptical as I am quite often approached with products that don't make the grade. My curiosity was soon aroused with words like "no preservatives", "no colourants", "no sugar", "organic" and "pre-packed for quick and easy lunch box inclusion". The last statement intrigued me most as healthy lunch box alternatives do not come pre-packed in colourful packets and boxes. My sample box arrived a few days later. Eager to review the taste and ingredients for myself, I tucked in and started tasting the various snack alternatives. The packaging is unique with raisins and dried apples packed in tiny boxes and squeeze pack juice alternatives. They offer a wide range of organic snacks with foods consisting of biscuits, compotes, maize snacks, cereals, puree and fruit bars, catering for children from six months to 10 years, but even had my teen eagerly tucking into the box of gingerbread biscuits. Organix gives parents the choice of including safe, convenient, organic snacks in their childrens lunch boxes. Look out for this new range in Baby City Stores, selected Pick 'n Pay's and Dischem stores nationwide. I have a sample box of Organix goodies up for grabs, simply leave your comments below, share your thoughts or tell us where you have found them. All comments must be submitted before the end of October 2010 to participate. (This competition is only open to residents in South Africa.)

Healthy Snacks: Peanut Butter balls

Healthy snacks do you find them? The answer is yes, but you need to read the labels carefully and often it is easier just to make them yourself. Melissa and Kelsey just love peanut butter and so we decided to try these peanut butter balls. We placed some of them in the deep freeze and they turned into "toffee", quite delicious.

Healthy Snacks: Halva Bar and Spicy Popcorn

Healthy Snacks: Found some cubed mango yesterday and couldn't resist it. Even though the summer fruits are never quite as tasty out of season we had an early taste of summer. Raspberries are also always a huge hit in my home, it is a real pity about the prices though as this is definately a fruit I could stock up with. I also included some naartjie wedges and a few slices of sweet pineapple. I could also include a bag of popcorn everyday and it always comes home eaten. Kids love popcorn! This popcorn was made in my hot air popcorn popper, drizzled with cold pressed olive oil and then generously sprinkled with some of Mary-Ann's seasoning salt - delicious. The halva bar is made only from fresh ingredients sesame seeds, dates and raisins. It is one of my favourite Mary-Ann bars and I often tuck in as a treat. It is an excellent natural and sugar free alternative to energy bars but unfortunately my girls are not too fond of the taste, it is quite rich but decadent. I'm sure it will become an acquired taste in the not to distant future.

Lunch Box Idea: Strawberries and Homemade Trail Mix

Same old lunch box idea. As you can see I have once again included strawberries in Melissa and Kelsey's lunchbox today. Strawberries are definately in at the moment and will be eaten three times a day if permitted. We've had them in fruit salad, juiced, ice lollies, ice cream but their absolute favorite is to eat them as is or as an occasional treat drizzled with cream. For a bit of variety I have mixed them with peeled oranges. We also mixed our own trail mix this morning. This ensures that it is preservative free. I also like to include the girls, and have them add the bits that they really enjoy, as this ensures that the lunchbox comes home empty. They are running in a cross country race this afternoon in their brand new DSG running vests , and I also included a bottle of filtered water which I am sure will be devoured after the race if not before. The extra large kiwis which are imported from New Zealand, I managed to acquire reasonably inexpensively, they have also been enjoyed this week. I have also prepared fruit salad below which will be light on their stomach but will give them enough energy to complete their 2km run. I hope that they have eaten all their raisins as these are also an excellent natural energy source. I'm off to Laerskool Jopie Fourie for the cross country.Enjoy your weekend!
