Healthy Peanut Butter

At last a great tasting healthy peanut butter....welcome to Oh Mega. Crede Natural Oils asked me to review their new Peanut Butter range:

  • Enriched with omega-3 flaxseed oil
  • No salt and no hydrogenated fats
  • Sweetened with honey
  • Available in smooth and crunchy
Peanut Butter is loved by both adults and children alike, but due to the high sugar, salt and hydrogenated fat content not something that I have recommended as a sandwich filler until now.

To review the products I called in the lunchbox specialists.....equipped them with jars of both the smooth and crunchy butter and told them to tuck in and give me their verdict.

VOILA! Lots of laughter, fun and tastebud tickling followed. Neither of the girls have been part of a product review before and were quite keen to have themselves heard.

Both of them liked the crunchy... I however, prefer the smooth, don't like juggling bits of nuts on my sandwich. I was expecting a rather bitter flaxseed taste, but Crede has somehow managed to mask the bitter flavour.

One can only pack so many PB & Jelly sandwiches, but with a house filled with Oh Mega jars I sat down and filtered through some of my older posts to compile this list of Peanut Butter Ideas.

Lunch box idea: Cheese Free Wholewheat pizza

Lunch box idea: A cheeseless wholewheat pizza was devoured by both girls today. Topped with red onions, sliced mushrooms, pitted olives and a tomato puree base. YUM! I also included some pea pods for protein and their all time favourite raspberries which will be consumed everyday if packed in - pity about the price of these decadent berries though.

Lunch box ideas: Oat Cakes with avo dip

More lunch box ideas: Today we had some oat cakes with avo dip (mixed with lemon juice to prevent browning). As is quite evident both Melissa and Kelsey have a sweet tooth and vege boxes just don't pack the same punch. Today strawberries, sliced plums, figs, dried preservative free mango and a large bag of popcorn graced the cooler box together with the oat cakes and avo dip. All the homemade dips have been popular so far...anyone have more great dip ideas?

Lunch Box:Wholewheat Blueberry Muffin

My promise... a surprise for an empty lunch box worked like a charm yesterday. Both Melissa and Kelsey's lunchboxes came home empty. This will not be an everyday occurence though but will be used as an incentive on days that I try different and most unusual combinations. Today the girls have a wholewheat blueberry muffin made with a combination of wholewheat and all purpose gluten free cake flour. They also have some lentil and rice balls (these are the meatball replica's in the photo) a baby banana, some pineapple rings and a sliced red plum. I'm awaiting the verdict on the lentil and rice balls as these are an excellent source of complex protein. Will they like them?

Lunch Box Ideas: Organic butternut puree

Finding lunch box ideas .....My girls have rediscovered a love for pureed food after spending a few weeks with their 12 month old cousin in the December holidays. I have discovered the wonderful new range of Organic pureed baby foods at Woollies and decided to surprise them with an inclusion in their school lunchbox. Something different and nutritious. Melissa was delighted to find provita's in her lunchbox today as she has always enjoyed these. Though not wheat and gluten free I'm sure all of you can relate to simply unspirational days where time simply runs away from you and you need to grab for a box. These will be few and far between in 2007.... The "glippertjies" are Kelsey's favourite and she can polish off quite a few bunches at once. These "glippertjies" are fresh from her grandpa's garden.  Do you have any friends or family that would like to receive our regular updates? PLease do email them as the more moms online the more inspiration and creative ideas for us all. Remember to keep emailing your lunchbox hits through to me for possible inclusion on the website.

On a stick: Fruit Kebabs

Today I chopped up kiwi fruit and orange segments and threaded them on a stick. The girls thoroughly enjoyed these, always amazes me how children think that the taste of food changes when you change the shape. I also found some boxed rice crackers at the spar free of sugar and other additives. These are exclusive to spar but not readily available and I have been unable to find them again. I have asked my local Spar to source them for me and will let you know as soon as they are in stock. The girls love these and they are wonderful to include in their lunchboxes be careful of the regular rice crackers which all supermarkets stock though as they are loaded with additives

Lunch Box Ideas: Triple Decker Corn Thins

Today I packed in triple decker corn thins spread thickly with peanut butter one of those quick, easy and simple lunch box ideas you can reach for on the fly. (Although peanut butter is not ideal opt for the sugar free variety or the natural pressed. You can also try home made cashew butter which is equally delicious.) For a bit of variety I pulled out the cookie cutter and sent some heart shaped cucumber slices to school to remind the girls how much I love them. Some grapes, guava slices and a juicy ripe pear to finish it off. This lunchbox is a winner!

Lunch Box Idea: Cream of Cauliflower Soup and Wholewheat bread

A great lunch box idea for a cold winter's morning,  a flask of cream of cauliflower soup and 2 slices of Mary-ann's Never Fail wholewheat bread to dip. Melissa and Kelsey insisted on their strawberries again today so I packed them in their whole form as this is how they most enjoy them. Today for a bit of variety I have included some guava wedges and a whole Granny Smith apple .... what are the chances of these whole apples being eaten?

Lunch Box Idea: Strawberries and Homemade Trail Mix

Same old lunch box idea. As you can see I have once again included strawberries in Melissa and Kelsey's lunchbox today. Strawberries are definately in at the moment and will be eaten three times a day if permitted. We've had them in fruit salad, juiced, ice lollies, ice cream but their absolute favorite is to eat them as is or as an occasional treat drizzled with cream. For a bit of variety I have mixed them with peeled oranges. We also mixed our own trail mix this morning. This ensures that it is preservative free. I also like to include the girls, and have them add the bits that they really enjoy, as this ensures that the lunchbox comes home empty. They are running in a cross country race this afternoon in their brand new DSG running vests , and I also included a bottle of filtered water which I am sure will be devoured after the race if not before. The extra large kiwis which are imported from New Zealand, I managed to acquire reasonably inexpensively, they have also been enjoyed this week. I have also prepared fruit salad below which will be light on their stomach but will give them enough energy to complete their 2km run. I hope that they have eaten all their raisins as these are also an excellent natural energy source. I'm off to Laerskool Jopie Fourie for the cross country.Enjoy your weekend!
